The Long-Awaited Party

The old saying that “no good deed goes unpunished” holds true here, at least, for this is what Bilbo experiences after freeing his friends from their barrels after a long ride down the river.

At first the bedraggled dwarves are very ornery and very ungrateful.

Gradually, however, they begin to appreciate their freedom, and—grudgingly—they offer Bilbo a few meager words of thanks.

The company’s next step is a trip into Lake-town. The next step for us, perhaps surprisingly, is a discussion on the nature and role of prophecy—in Tolkien’s world and in Scripture.
